(1USD = 1/1400 ounce) Sapa suruh hangpa buat koin 1/1400.

"There is no such thing of Islamic Banking, apa yang Islam saya pun tak fahamlah. Sebab itulah Yahudi tak menentang bila orang Islam cipta Bank Islam, konsepnya sama saja macam Bank Konvesional. Cuma nama je tukar pada nama Arab. Islam lah sangat tu...

Why money should be in gold? A response of TDM's opinion

I read this article. I quote what TDM has said through the article.
"Backing currency with gold does not make it Islamic, former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said on Tuesday. He said it became Islamic only if transaction in the currency did not involve interest or riba. "It is not the name that is important. It is the gold backing for the currency, whatever may be its name," he said in a keynote address at the Global Islamic Finance Forum 2010 here.He said there were repeated suggestions for the use of gold dinars, and Muslims bankers must not be moved by sentiments alone. He said people needed also to be conscious that gold prices could change and its value in different countries would differ."If we use gold as a currency domestically, the purchasing power will differ with different countries. Besides that, its bulk makes it unsuitable as currency for everyday use," he said.
There is a time to support him. But this time i don't think so. I would like to come up these questions so that people could aware why this time i disagree with him.
1. Does fiat money carries interest? Absolutely. That's why money should be in gold.
2. You go to the bank, borrow RM100, do they allow you to pay back RM100? Absolutely can't. That's why money should be in gold.
3. Are we feel safer to carry 1 kijang emas or RM4,000 in your pocket? For me, surely i will carry an a ounce of gold. It's just a size of 50 cents coin. Still not practical?. I suggest this.
4.Gold prices change every day thus make them unsuitable as currency? Gold price changes because we measure them in fiat money. Gold prices will not be changed frequently if the measurement of gold is not in fiat money. The gold price should be freed from any fiat money measurement. I know it's impossible for time being but to say that gold prices are changing every day because of gold itself is not really true. The true is because the influence of world currencies that also changes.
5. The changes of gold price bring about the good things. It eliminate the power of manipulation in few hands thus make individuals greater in determining prices and it should be like this in the real economy.

Dinar and dirham booth opened in IID SE 2010 competition

After 2 and half days of the exhibition at Invention, innovation and design - Special Edition 2010 since last Tuesday, now it's come to the end where today will be announced the result for the competition. It was a great experience to be here with all the inventors of their own and to know what exactly the real and practical requirement from the market. For time being, I've done my job in exploring the potential of dinar and dirham and it's up to the judges to give which color of medal they preferred.

With my partner Us. Saufi at Dinar booth

With partner at dirham booth

Giving the explanation was a tough job sometime.

Student to explain gold dinar and silver dirham...well done!

If our students could explain gold dinar and silver dirham as what Saffawati had explained is more than enough. Simple and understandable.

At least, beliau dah memeparkatakannya. Namun, beberapa komen terutamanya daripada Arzim Naim, Chartered Islamic Finance Professional (CIFP)adalah kurang tepat apabila cuba membandingkannya dengan amalan perubatan. Beliau kata:
"The misconception of gold dinar link to the religious dogma must be corrected. I want to use the analogy of this misconception from the uses of anesthetic in medical surgery. The anesthetic substance was found in 16th century and only to be used in medical surgery in early 19th century. This is because of the religious dogma saying that one needs to endure the pain without any reliance to anesthetic. I believe, the application of gold dinar chip as currency is just a pure religious dogma in the modern economic literature or just a form of identity clash to show that I am more Islamic than the others. It reminds me to the story of Pakistan when they were separated from India. In order to show to the world that they are different from its counterpart (and should have a new identity) and to be seen more Islamic, thus, the late General Zia ul-Haq in 1970s determined to have full Islamic economic system disregarding the conventional economic system that relied on interest-based (usury) endorsed by the predecessor in just one night without any proper planning."

Kenapa kurang tepat?

Keempat, dogma yang dikatakan beliau iaitu "This is because of the religious dogma saying that one needs to endure the pain without any reliance to anesthetic" tidaklah diketahui mana sumbernya. Adakah ianya sumber sunnah mahupun Quran?

Jawapan keempat pula no comment sebab dah ramai rakan-rakan terlibat.

Tepuk dada tanya ilmu akhirat masing2.

Kelantan state launches Islamic currency

A good news about dinar today..
Excerpt from AFP news.

A Malaysian state on Thursday launched the Islamic dinar and dirham as an alternative currency, allowing the golden and silver coins to be used as legal tender alongside conventional banknotes.

Authorities in northern Kelantan state, which is ruled by the Islamic opposition party PAS, said the Islamic currencies would be used in many shops in the state in addition to the national currency, the ringgit.

"We have over 1,000 shops that have signed up to our campaign and agreed to accept the dinar and dirham for the purchase of goods," state cabinet minister Husam Musa told AFP.

He said signboards have been erected in the main market in the state capital Kota Bharu to show the conversion table between the dinar and ringgit, and participating shops will display stickers to encourage people to use the coins.

"The response has been very positive and all the coins which were worth a total of 2.0 million ringgit (629,000 dollars) have been sold out at the launch today," said Husam, who is in charge of economic and finance planning.

According to Islamic law, the dinar measures 4.25 grams of gold, while the dirham is 3.0 grams of pure silver.

A golden coin is equivalent to about 582 ringgit (183 dollars) while the silver coin is worth around 13 ringgit but their values fluctuate according to market prices.

Husam said the dinar and dirham currencies can also be used dealings with state goverment agencies, such as paying "zakat", or alms for the poor.

There has been a long debate in Malaysia, a Muslim-majority country with large ethnic Chinese and Indian communities, to introduce the coins as legal tender nationally.

Former premier Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, whose administration promoted a moderate form of Islam that emphasised economic and scientific development, shot down the proposal to use the Islamic currencies.

But his predecessor, Mahathir Mohamad, was an advocate of the dinar system and urged Muslim countries to use it as a trade instrument.

The debate has died down since current Prime Minister Najib Razak came to power last year

Jangan samakan intan dan kaca

1. The rejection of fiat money is not only because of the system itself. It's more than that. I have spoken about this a year ago in this blog. You may read here. Some of us may thought if the system could be treated correctly, whatever monies (either fiat or commodity) used could be a medium of transaction. I think let's we take a look at a glance of history of financial system before we could agree.

2. By looking back to history (in 1920's), we found the system was superb and tremendously excellent which was gold to be kept in a secure vault and only a piece of guaranteed and redeemable paper to be practiced during transaction.

3.General idea is good but due to the regulation of the system was human made; weaknesses easily occurred. The 'self-temptation' of ordinary man suddenly was appeared (bad deeds and behaviour such as greedy, power craziness etc are among the biggest one) and started to conquer and disturb the rationality of human, thus, leads to a failure in 1970's. It is an excellent at the beginning but not the ending. That's how the past was telling us. Should we create another failure in the future?

4.People can't be able to make themselves sustainably good in all time. Allah knows better His creature. The gold and silver are likely to be a self guidance in financial sector and automatically remove the unnecessary interruption made by man directly or indirectly; intentionally or unintentionally. The history's evidence told us that people-money relation are always irregular among each other.

5. Every creature created by Allah is not useless. The gold and silver treasured under the ground is not for nothing.

The theft of nations: returning to gold

Last weekend, due to the connection's inability of network at home, i was reading this book written by Assoc. Prof Ahamed Kameel Mydin Meera from IIUM. Even though, it was published 5 years ago, only last week, i have the opportunity to finished up the contents within 3 days. Overall, i found it is a good book for denarist and public who wanted to know specifically about the operation of current financial system and how's the wealth of developing nations has been stolen by foreign banks. At the same time the approach of the book is not too technical or mathematical approached that makes public difficult to understand. It's suited for all and just need a basic knowledge in economics such as fractional reserves system. Roughly, the contents are not so different of what he had written before in his book titled 'Islamic Gold Dinar', also published by Pelanduk Publication in 2002. This book is focused deeply on the current fiat monetary system and how the gold dinar can be implemented in a practical way in international and domestic trade and transaction. It is also added up some extra info about gold and asserted with several appendixes which is not found in his first book (Islamic Gold Dinar)

Here i quoted few words from the summary of the book that written at the back page of the book.
"This book is a critique of the the iterest-based fiat monetary system. It highlights the many shortcomings inherent in it, with regard to stability and justice. It reasons why the system is unsustainable, yet an easy tool for economic colonialism that had promoted the "theft" of individual nations by global power structure. As for solutions to the global monetary problem. two major movements seem to be taking place. One calls for the establishment of global central bank with a singleworld currency, while the other, fot the return to real money systems (as opposed to fiat money systems) like gold, commodity monies, complementary currencies etc."

Thus, i would like to recommend this book to all who get interested on this and feel concern about what is tragically happening nowadays in our economy. To UiTM students especially who now studying ISB 544 and ISB662 (Islamic Economic and Globalization) should read this book!

UiTM Gold Dinar Conference: "A new paradigm?"

Last Wednesday, audience have been revealed a secrecy of current system of what western scholars claimed it's a system that can last forever. The realised "secret" of our financial and banking system that totally based on the credit has been created and planned for so long seemingly eroding and becoming extinct supported by numerous unsolved crises in economy. Recession, unemployment, inflation, doom, bubbles and dozen of other terms are seems to be irrelevant in establishing a fair and stable economy.
Once again, Mr. Abdul Halim, as usual who is the determining speaker at that night, was successfully delivering a crucial information about the current situation that waves our economic activities particularly through banking industry. This is so called "new paradigm" for certain audience who are probably listening for the first time about the corruption that planned by zionist through usery-riba mechanism that rooted in our banking and financial systems for quite long time. The solution is so easy, switch to gold dinar. Of course the implementation will be facing tougher challenge especially in convincing Muslim countries to engage between them. But once it can be applied, the current interest based system will face a very big crush. Since then, who's care about America..? Only producing country will survive.. not a lending country!

Zubair Hassan against Ahamed Kamel Mydin Meera's stand in gold dinar?

vs

I read paper through MPRA (Munich Personal ReREc Archive) written by Prof Zubair Hasan from IIUM about gold dinar. I think he is the one scholar who is not agreeing about gold dinar to be implemented. You could see his paper here. He strongly disagree about gold dinar. His paper titled of "Ensuring exchange rate stability: Is return to gold (Dinar) possible? continuously arguing of what have been researched and proved by Ahamaed Kamel Mydin Meera about gold dinar and fiat money. Meera who is now currently assoc prof in IIUM and becoming full prof in a very soon has been refused by Zubair in all ways and models that has been developed by him (Meera).

I pose Zubair's arguments on Meera's papers.

1st argument (on Meera's book titled of The Islamic gold dinar:2002):
In Zubair's part of the paper particularly in the literature review, he argued about fiqhi matter regarding gold dinar. He questioned Meera's paper about the commandment of implementing gold dinar is not necessary to be compulsory. I quoted what he said, "Is the using of gold dinar (or gold) as money a Shariah obligation for Muslims? Moreover, he was taking lower rank status of evidence by only according to what has said by Haneef and Barakat (2006) compared to Meera who is straightly taken the sunnah in enlighting discussion.

In his paper, by mentioned again Haneef and Barakat (2006), he stated that some of the scholars argued that only gold and silver can be used as money. Others maintain that there is no such compulsions: materials other than gold and silver could also be used as money.

2nd argument (on Meera's paper titled of "Seigniorage o fiat money and the maqasid al-Shariah: the unattainableness of the maqasid)

In this Meera's paper, again he refused to believe that fiat money system is not compatible with the objectives of the Islamic Shariah by redifining his own understanding about the of seigniorage. He said "seigniorage meant something claimed by the soverign of a feudal lord as his prerogative in relation to society. In the context of money, it was the percentage share of the crown in the bullion people brought to the loyal mint to get converted into coins. Now-a-days the term is aplied to all money, incluidng the credit banks crete. Such extension of the term is not appropriate. People do not pay for printing of notes the central bank issues. The objective is not to enrich the crown."

The 3rd argument:
He argued by questioning "Is the fiat money system inherently more unstable compared to the gold-based exchange rates? His taken the words from Paul Einzig to enlight his discussion by stating that prices in the world have been rising over the past five thousand years; the upward legs of the cycles tended to grow longer, and downward turns sharper, while the bottoms were agonizingly broader, recovery being slow and painful. Money incomes not necessarily money supply tended to expand faster during inflation than rel economy. Proving that fiat money system is inflationary does not cut much ice; one must, in addition, bring evidence from the history of gold standard to show that things were better under that system. Unless one juxtapose comparative pictures, one is not on firmer rounds."

Any denarists would like to counter back his arguments? Please read Zubair's research paper to know better about him.

That's why i mentioned before the gold dinar is not just system but the need of our belief!

3rd IBBC 2008 in UMS

On last 15th to 17th, I was in UMS, Sabah attended and presented a paper in 3rd International Borneo Bussines Conference (IBBC). This is the first time i went there and i had some new experiences. A bitter and nice one's.

The topic i had presented is "The applicability of Gold Dinar in hedging prices". Basically, this paper proves the stability of gold dinar compared to US dollar in stabilizing prices. Three main commodities have been chosen to be analysed which are oil prices, consumer goods prices and construction prices. The data was taken from National Statistical Department and the research year is between 1996 to 2005.

Findings shown that, gold dinar is succeed to stabilize prices compared to US dollar. You can see to this graph below.

You see..how stable it is (gold dinar..)!

Jgn salahkan Amerika kalau Ms nya tinggi jika semua pelosok kerajaan seantero dunia tetap demand kepadanya. Jangan cakap pasal dolar akan runtuh, selagi kita tiada ikhtiar untk menggantikannya. Mengapa salahkan dolar, jika kita masih lagi berterusan menyimpan dolar dalam kantung reserve negara. Mana emasnya..?

Pernahkah kita bertanya kepada Bank Islam kenapa mereka tiada gold bullion mereka sendiri?, Pernahkah kita bertanya kepada diri sendiri bagaimanakah sistem dinar boleh diterima ramai?
